How to Stencil an IceTub for Beverages

Monday, June 8, 2015

I am so excited for my high school girlfriend and her family. They have made a "Big purchase" recently. They bought a house in the woods on a lake in Wisconsin. Growing up my girlfriend her family vacationed at the lake nearby their new home. She met her delightful hubby there while hanging out with the kids at the lake for Summer break. Their love story reminds me of the movie Dirty Dancing in a dreamy sort of way. <3
I was digging deep for a great gift idea for celebrating the special time in her families life. This present needs to be as incredible as my friends who I consider chosen family. I purchased an acrylic ice tub in a rectangular shape from Home Goods. I have an added surprise for her hubby, but that will have to wait.
My plan to create a template of their last name in LB Timely font to personalize the ice tub and the tray.

I used silver label material cut out the design carefully apply it to the ice tub. I set it up to cut following the example below.
This picture of the Silhouette America Cameo cutting the label material is pretty cool to me. Do you get happy as your crafting projects are falling into place as planned?
EEEEK! Breaks Please! What happened here?  I used the Glad cut and seal it to transfer the label to the ice tub. When I did this there was some sticky residue left on the label. My brilliant idea to take wet a paper towel with water and rub off the residue.
As you can see this was a major mistake. Now I decided to take all the silver off and make it look frosted. Great I can save this project.
Well not yet as you can see the silver was not budging is some spots. What am I going to do now? I grabbed leftover gray chalk paint to give some adhesion to the ice tub turning this label into a stencil.
I stenciled two coats of metallic copper on top of the chalk paint to give the tub a rustic yet classic finish to the name.

I am happy with the way their name turned out on the ice tub. That little bit of rustic shimmer shows up nicely in this photograph.
It is time to party so grab a beverage have a seat and enjoy some Summer Living.
When I am able to visit my friends at their new home I can bet there will be ice but not soda in this ice tub. Cheers! To my friends and many years of happiness in your lake home.

I have become an affiliate for The Ultimate Silhouette Guide.
I purchased the E-book loaded it onto my computer and began devouring the tips in tricks in one easy to read place. I wish this E-book was available two years ago because many of my projects would have gone much smoother. I would have had a few less recycle bins full of scrap supplies. How many of you remember Sweet Baby Love Quilt post and the struggles I had with the fabric cutting? Click here for a reminder. The end result was fine in the Sweet Baby Love Quilt Reveal, Click here to see the finished quilt. When I read the section on fabric it was a light bulb moment. Plus I was surprised at how many features there were that I hadn't tried yet.

This is great! I still have not tried to stencil on glass but it's on my list of "to try" with my Silhouette. I love how yours turned out, nice job!

Great minds think alike Karen. I almost did a similar project for this challenge. I bought the container and then decided it was actually a great way of organizing all my incoming craft supplies to be used or put away. I still need to personalize it. :) Thanks for sharing your great ideas.

It turned out beautifully!! I like it even better than it would have looked with the printable foil. Kudos to you for sticking with it and not giving up!

Great way to salvage your project! I imagine that was frustrating in the beginning, but I think I like this even better than your original plan!

Looks amazing my friend. I am sure it will be used for many many years!

Wow what a great save! I would have never known this was a fix! I've heard mixed things about glad press and seal for transfer tape. To be honest I am frugal and almost always transfer by hand. I know I'm crazy it takes a lot of patience. Your friend is lucky to have such a sweet crafty friend.

Angela @ A Little Blue Room,
Thank you for leaving a note and compliment. The Ice-Tub is made of acrylic, which is why I used paint. I just wanted to be clear. The etching cream can not be used on this item!
